“I don’t call boys.” Those words rattled around in the ether as I lie awake in my bed.

“What does that even mean?” I asked aloud. “She doesn’t call boys?”

Just a few hours earlier I clocked out after a long fifteen hour day at the theater. I was a lighting designer for an upcoming musical review and I was beat. My day began with an entire redesign of the venue’s lighting system. The upcoming show included nearly 300 performers. Nearly every inch of the venue needed to be lit and I was the only designer/operator hired for the gig. By the end of the day my arms and legs were lead. My head was pounding. But as I walked out to my car I saw a sight that immediately took all the pain away and gave me an immediate shot of adrenaline.

She was a cute little blond holding all of her costumes over her arm. She looked as though she was waiting for someone as she stood still in a pool of light created by a lone parking lot fixture.

    “Hi.” I said smiling.

“Hey, there.” She said, but she didn’t look down at her feet. She looked right back at me, eye to eye.

The back lot of the theater where my car was parked and where this chance encounter was unfolding was vacant besides us. “What are you doing out here on your own?” I asked.

“Waiting for my friend. You’re the lighting guy, right?”

“That’s right. Did I get the lighting right for your solo?” I asked with a chuckle. She laughed too. She had a big cameo in the show dressed as May West (did I mention it was a variety show–think Vaudevillian).

    She laughed.

“Yeah, I think so.” She said. Our eyes met again. It was like an electromagnetic connection between our eyes. I couldn’t look away. For a moment we said nothing as the darkness shrouded our conversation around our island of light.

Just then her friend emerged from the theater talking a mile-a-minute. The friend grabbed her by the arm and they began walking to another car in the lot. “Here’s my card,” I said. My number is at the bottom. Give me a call sometime.”

She took one look. Pushed the card into her pocket and said with a smile, “I don’t call boys.” With a quick pivot and swish of her hair she escaped the island of light.

I somehow found a way to fall asleep later that night. I couldn’t get the image of those piercing eyes out of my head.

The next day I went on with my day. I am sure I attended class that day (I was in college at the time) and then went home to change for another long afternoon at the theater. There was a lengthy dress rehearsal planned and I needed to be there early for additional setup. Arriving back at my place I noticed my answering machine blinking (it was 1998). I pushed play.

“Hi. It’s me. May West… Say, I won’t be able to drive home after rehearsal tonight. Could you give me a ride?”

Blondy didn’t call boys, but she called me.

That is how I met Lovely–my wife of 14 years and my beautiful, obedient married submissive for 3 years. We have 2 young children who are our timeless inspirations.
