We're off to the Races | Couple's Challenge | Pony Play

Calling all subMrs and husDOMs….We’re off to the races! The horse races!! And not just any old horse race…but the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing.

What is the Triple Crown?

Often shortened to Triple Crown, this is a series of horse races for three-year-old thoroughbreds. Winning all three of these races is considered the greatest accomplishment in thoroughbred racing…. and for horse racing fans, this is the pinnacle of the season. When the potential Triple Crown winner emerges…. There is nothing more exciting!

Winning the Triple Crown is one of the most coveted and celebrated achievements in sports. This is an elusive achievement, and only 13 horses have accomplished the feat since 1875, the first year that all three races were in existence.

Triple Crown History

The last and most recent Triple Crown winner was Justify in 2018. American Pharoah became the 12th Triple Crown winner in 2015, something no horse had accomplished since 1978. However, Secretariat, probably the most famous Triple Crown winner according to who you ask, shattered course records in 1973 and still holds these records today. Secretariat broke records when he ran the mile and a quarter of the Kentucky Derby in just 1:59 flat. His record still stands as the fastest stakes record at Churchill Downs. He set a new World Record, running the Belmont mile and a half in 2:24, winning by 30 lengths. And this record will likely never be broken.

The First Jewel

The Kentucky Derby, run a Churchill Downs, is the first jewel in the Triple Crown. This race is considered “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports”, and will determine the potential Crown winner. The “Run for the Roses” is the first step to see who has a shot at the Crown. The Kentucky Derby is a day-long event famous for its Mint Juleps, classy to crazy hats, and celebrity watching.

The Second Jewel

The second jewel in the Crown cums from Maryland and Pimlico Race Course, with the Preakness Stakes. This is the shortest leg of the Triple Crown and is a week long celebration. Preakness traditions include singing “Maryland, My Maryland”, the “painting of the colours” where a painter climbs a ladder to the top of the replica Old Clubhouse right after the winner is announced and applies the colours of the winning team’s silks to the cupola’s weather vane, and draping the winning horse with a blanket of black-eyes susans. The trophy for this race, The Woodlawn Vase, is the most valuable trophy in American sports. It is valued at $1 million dollars!

The Third Jewel

The third and final jewel in the Triple Crown is the Belmont Stakes. Held at Belmont Park, near New York City, it is the oldest and longest of the three races. This race has cum to be known as “The Test of Champions” because by the time this race is run, the field of competitors has been weeded out so that only the very best of the crop is left to compete. The Belmont is also known as “The Run for the Carnations” because the winning horse is draped with a blanket of white carnations after the race. The owner is presented with a silver trophy from Tiffany & Co.

Race Day Tradition

Each of the three races is surrounded in its own pomp and pageantry, including customs and enduring traditions. These traditions include their own song, flower, and cocktail. The Kentucky Derby has “My Old Kentucky Home”, the Rose, and the Mint Julep. The Preakness Stakes has “Maryland, My Maryland”, the Black-eyed Susan, and the Black-eyed Susan cocktail, crafted from vodka, pineapple, orange, and lime. And the Belmont Stakes has “New York, New York”, the White Carnation, and a cocktail made with Bourbon, lemonade, and pomegranate juice known as the Belmont Jewel.

  1. This was a fantastic event. We were unable to make the official pole times but it inspired new opportunities to play. GLM and I have had a great time hearing about the event and testing some of the techniques we read about. Amazing fun!
